A Brief History of Hanbury
The name Hanbury Manor is a modern one. The first house on this site, built around 1730, was called Poles. After passing through several hands, Poles was leased in 1800 to the Hanbury family, owners of the London brewery “Truman, Hanbury & Buxton”. In 1884 Poles passed to Edmund Hanbury and his wife Amy.
In 1890 – 1891 the house was demolished and re- placed by a new one, in Jacobean style. From 1913 – 23 Poles was home to businessman Henry King and his family. He built a new stable block and laid out a nine hole golf course in the park to Harry Vardon’s design.
From 1923 to 1986 Poles was a convent school run by the Faithful Companions of Jesus. New classrooms, dormitories and a chapel designed by Walter Watson were added in 1932.
When the school closed Poles was acquired by developers Landbase Ltd who proceeded to create a luxury re- sort, hotel and country club with 18 holes golf course, which opened in 1990 as Hanbury Manor. Hanbury Manor was rebranded a Marriott Hotel in 1996.
